2 ERNA

2.1 ERNA site

The website that has the most extensive information-overview of the IT-facilities of the Erasmus University is www.erna.nl/english/. At this website you will find many useful links to change your password, etc.

2.2 ERNA account

Your ERNA account will give you access to the EUR IT facilities. ERNA is a shortcut for Erasmus Remote Network Access. Your ERNA-id will be a combination of your student number and initials, for example: 123456ab@eur.nl.

Please note: your account is strictly personal. For security reasons, we strongly recommend to change the password that you get from the ESSC. Before you start you college year in September you will receive a letter from the ESSC with your ERNA account and the password. The letter also includes the link to the website where you are able to change your password: personal.idm.eur.nl. Your new password will be activated immediately.

You will always need your ERNA account to log on to the systems of the Erasmus University.

3 Online services

3.1 Varying systems

Not all faculties use the same systems to pass on information to their students. All these methods have their own login system. Via the homepage of your faculty, you can find the links to the system your faculty uses. It is also possible to connect straightaway with the systems, through http://www.sin-online.nl (Sin-online), http://www.myeur.nl (MyEur) of www.eur.edu (Blackboard).

3.2 MyEUR

MyEUR is a portal where you find an overview of the university's educational systems. The portal offers access to facilities such as webmail, Blackboard and SIN-online.

The MyEUR homepage contains several small blocks. Each block represents a system, such as SIN-online, BlackBoard and Osiris. Although you can find an overview on MyEUR, to get access to the proper information you still might have to click on the link of the system you want to work with. You will always need to use the other systems as well. MyEUR just offers a general overview.

On the left side of the page, you will find useful links, such as SVS and the ERNA-site.

3.3 SIN-online

SIN-online is a system for subscription-based information. You can choose for yourself which topics you want to receive information about, such as different courses or sports. Some faculties oblige you to subscribe to certain courses via SIN. Connect via http://www.sin-online.nl, select your faculty in the menu on the left and log on with your ERNA-account. Once you've subscribed to a channel, you can sign up for exams and workgroups, see your grades and stay up-to-date about the course. On http://www.sin-online.nl/docs/howto_ student.html you can learn more on how SIN-Online works and what it has to offer.

You can access SIN-online with your ERNA-account. In SIN-online you will find a menu on the left side of the page. In the middle of the page messages of the feeds you took a subscription on will be displayed. These feeds can be either courses, or other feeds you are interested in (like the channel of the ESSC).

The SIN-online menu contains, e.g.:

My Page

the homepage that appears when you log on to SIN-online

My Webmail

webmail

My Timetable

your schedule

My Grades

your preliminary grades (the final grades will be shown in Osiris)

My registrations

see which workgroups you registered for

My folders

folders with files from your channels

My uploads

Subscribe

this options allows you to subscribe to a channel

Confiq

change your personal settings and active the SMS-alert

Course Guide

Osiris-Student, Blackboard, MyEUR

hyperlinks to the other systems

We recommend you to take a subscription on your courses’ channels. That way you will always be updated if there are changes in the schedule and you can receive messages from your teachers more easily. Another recommendation is to subscribe to a channel called ‘Tentamenlocaties’. This channel displays the exam-locations, in that way you will know where your exams will take place.

3.4 Osiris

Osiris is a system for subscription to exams or re-sits. Osiris also presents your personal information, like your address as registered by the university. The system does not allow you to change this personal information.

The headlines of the Osiris-pages are clear: there is an option for registration for courses and exams, an overview with results and even your schedule can be displayed in Osiris. The grades presented in Osiris are the final grades you got for the course, as registered by the exam administration. These are the only ‘official’ grades.

Via the Course Guide (as presented in SIN-Online) you can retrieve the specific ‘ code’ of a course, that code allows you to find back the course easier in Osiris.

3.5 BlackBoard

Blackboard is the digital learning environment of the EUR, and is used to exchange information between students and teachers. You can find Blackboard via: www.eur.edu. Once you have subscribed to a course, the course will be listed in Blackboard in My Courses and Courses in which you are enrolled. The box My announcements shows the latest updates from your teacher. If you click on a specific course, you enter the course-environment. A menu on the left side of the page helps you navigate through Blackboard, the options you will use frequently are:

Course Documents

documents you will use during term can be uploaded

Assignments

via SafeAssignment you can upload your own assignments

Communications

contains a list of fellow students and the option to email them

4 Other facilities

4.1 PC’s on campus

With your ERNA account, you have access to student PC’s at the faculties and computers located in the University Library and in the G-building. To log on to the pc’s of the ESE PC-lab in the H-building please use your short ERNA-ID (without the suffix @eur.nl, using only 123456ab).

4.2 Receiving notifications via SMS

In SIN-online you can activate an alert to get notified by SMS about schedule-changes or when grades are published. If you are logged on in SIN-online you can choose the option ‘config’ in the menu on the left. ‘My Configuration’ appears and you can fill out your phone number and tap the box ‘Grades & messages via SMS’ (free service).

4.3 RePub

RePub (http://repub.eur.nl) is an online application that teachers use to publish articles, so students can download them. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to buy the literature yourself. When a teacher refers to RePub, there will be a link (and if necessary login information) published on the intranet. This usually happens through BlackBoard.

4.4 24eur7

This is a new webservice provided by the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), replacing the squirrel mail service as of the end of February 2012. Through 24EUR7, the EUR offers its students access to e-mail, a digital agenda, data storage and online Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications. All students will be able to access 24EUR7 through their ERNA account and easily locate each other and work together. Please visit www.eur.nl/english/24eur7.

4.5 ASK

ASK is a service offered by the ESSC. It is a database filled with general questions about the bachelor and master programs the EUR offers. Besides those subjects there are also other general subjects like which cultural or sports events are held at university. You can visit the ASK website at http://www.eur.nl/essc/ask. If you can not find a useful answer to your question, you can contact the ESSC by calling them: 010-4082323.

5 VPN Connection

5.1 Use

VPN is the abbreviation for Virtual Private Network. VPN enables you to make a connection with protected parts of the EUR network. The VPN connection of the Erasmus University allows you to access different sources, for example the databases the University Library has a subscription on.

5.2 Manual

Creating a VPN-connection is not very difficult. This site offers manuals for the different operating systems. If you can not manage to install the VPN connection yourself, you can always consult one of the helpdesk assistants. Note: If you are working on a pc’s on campus, you immediately have access to the online literature.

5.3 Mac

We do not support mac pc's. The only thing we have to offer you about mac and VPN connection is the following manual: http://www.macstudent.net/wiki/nl/index.php/VPN_%28EUR%29_English.

6 Security

6.1 Use of the EUR facilities

As a student you are required to use the online facilities of the EUR safely. Do not share your password or other account information with fellow students or staff members. If you want to read more about the safety policy concerning networks and computers of the EUR, click on this link.

6.2 CyberSave Yourself

DBe Safe, also on the Internet! An important campaign about using the Internet ‘safely’ is CyberSave Yourself. The website accompanying this campaign provides information about how to protect yourself against spyware, hackers, etc. Visit: www.surfnet.nl/en/thema/cybersafe/.

7 Useful links

For useful links on all of these subjects, go to: http://www.esl.eur.nl/facb /lia/pclab/english/useful_links/.
