Former Prime Minister Dr J.P. Balkenende appointed Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation professor at Erasmus School of Law and Erasmus School of Economics


The Executive Board of the Erasmus University Rotterdam takes great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Jan Peter Balkenende as professor from 1 December 2010. Dr Balkenende will hold the new Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation chair.

Chairman of the Executive Board mr Pauline van der Meer Mohr is gratified that dr Balkenende is coming to the Erasmus University Rotterdam: “We can benefit from his international experience and contacts in the context of the Erasmus University Rotterdam’s further internationalisation in its research and teaching.”

The Executive Board of the Erasmus University Rotterdam takes great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Jan Peter Balkenende as professor from 1 December 2010. Dr Balkenende will hold the new Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation chair.

The chair is shared by the Erasmus School of Law (ESL) and the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE). Both deans, prof. dr Philip Hans Franses (ESE) and prof. mr Maarten Kroeze (ESL) expect the arrival of dr Balkenende to provide a strong impulse to the internationalisation.

Franses believes that “Jan Peter Balkenende brings with him a unique combination of political-administrative and scientific knowledge.” Adds Kroeze: “We think he will serve as an inspiring example to students, and that our scientists will benefit from the international experience and contacts he has acquired.”

Dr Balkenende was the prime minister of the Netherlands from 2002 to 2010, and during the four preceding years, he served as chairman of the CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal) parliamentary party in the Dutch House of Representatives, from October 2001. Between 1984 and 1998, he worked as senior staff assistant in the scientific institute for the CDA. During this period, he graduated in Governmental Regulation and Social Organisations (1992). From 1993 to 2002, he was extraordinary professor in Christian-social Consideration of Economics and Society at the VU University in Amsterdam. Dr Balkenende studied Dutch Jurisprudence and Economic and Social History. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from universities in Budapest, Tokyo and Seoul.
