Graduation Business, Corporate and Maritime Law and Commercial Law
During a warm, sunny week at the end of June, 2 graduation ceremonies took place. Wednesday 30 June marked the end of the year for most Business, Corporate and Maritime Law students. Many of the students' (a very international group) relatives travelled all the way to Rotterdam to attend the ceremony. After a speech by Programme Director Filip De Ly the diplomas were handed out to the students. Jozefina Guzman (Philippines) graduated with the distinction "cum laude". Congratulations to all students!
Two days later, on Friday 2 July the Commercial Law graduation ceremony took place. Programme Director Frank Smeele praised the students graduating on that day for their accomplishments: the graduates completed the programme in no less than 10 months (CL is a 12-month programme). After a short speech he presented the diplomas to the students.
On 27 August a special graduation ceremony of International and European Public Law took place.
All graduates also received a yearbook. Congratulations once more, and please keep in touch!
News from our alumni - About TAWLA - from Annmarie Mavenjina
Currently I work as the Executive Director of TAWLA. I am grateful for the excellent learning experience and skills I acquired at Erasmus University. This has built my capacity to be able to work efficientIy.
Tanzania Women Lawyers Association is the leading women lawyers association in Tanzania.
On 10th May 2010 TAWLA commemorated twenty years of campaigning and support for women and children's rights . We celebrated with the slogan 'Haki ya mwanamke ni haki ya wote' (women's rights are everyone's rights) and we had a walk/rally from the resident magistrates court, Kisutu to Mnazi Moja (It is a open space i.e. public ground used for various functions.). Our Association also decided to offer free legal aid services throughout the week to vulnerable women, children and men who cannot afford the services of an advocate.
The guest of honor for the day was the Vice President, Dr.Ali Mohamed Shein. The event was attended by over 500 people and we also launched our strategic plan which is also available on the website.

News from our alumni - Solomon Fikre Lemma
Warwick is a great University, just like Erasmus is. It is a good place to study at, and I am glad I am a PhD student here. I am supervised by Dr. Sammy Adelman.
I just finished my first year, and I will complete my study in two or three years time, depending on my performance. I do my research on Law and Development in Ethiopia. And, therefore, frequently travel to Ethiopia to collect data in the field.

Conference Socio Economic Participation of Minorities in Relation to their right to (respect for) identity - 27, 28, 29 October
The first MRN conference focuses on a theme that has not been explored yet, more particularly the socio-economic participation of minorities in relation to their right to (respect for) identity. Everybody is aware of the severe problems in terms of actual access to and enjoyment of (even very basic) social and economic rights by persons belonging to minorities. At the same time, there is ample awareness about hypes concerning prohibitions to wear the veil at school, and persons being fired because of unauthorized absences due to religious observances. Similarly, mismatches in linguistic proficiencies can also lead to flawed access to social services and public administration. Read more.....
Growing number of Erasmus LL.M. students
This year more students have enrolled in our LL.M. programmes than last year. Especially Commercial Law enjoys an ongoing growing popularity. In total (including our exchange students), Erasmus School of Law welcomed a groupof 140 international students. Another group of European Master in Law and Economics students will arrive in October to start with their programme. We would like to wish all students a pleasant and interesting stay in Rotterdam!
The Research Lab: the results
Nathanael Ali and Wasima Khan receive faculty funded doctoral positions and will join respectively, the department of International Law and the department of Business Law. Nine students participated in the Research Lab, which ran during the academic year 2009/2010. The Research Lab resulted in four interesting proposals worthy of submission to NWO. Erasmus China Law Centre
Erasmus School of Law is happy to announce the setting up of Erasmus China Law Centre
Over the past 30 years, economic progress and the opening up of China to the world have changed China’s international image considerably. China has become the world’s third largest economy with many global companies operating on the Chinese market.
Parallel with its economic progress, China has also engaged in the reconstruction of its legal system. From a nearly lawless country at the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the Chinese legislature at the central and provincial levels has promulgated more than three thousand laws and regulations concentrated on, but not limited to, economic matters, and has signed up to major multilateral agreements covering trade, the environment, human rights, intellectual property and a host of other issues.
Chinese law has become increasingly important not only for the Chinese but also for other nations: foreign businesses need to apply Chinese law in their investment and trade undertakings; foreign politicians want to understand Chinese law so as to make sensible decisions in dealing with China in trade, human rights, political and environmental issues; some foreign scholars are interested in Chinese law because of their professional interest and vision of integrating the Chinese legal system into the world system. Frequently, university students in law and political sciences have a desire to know and understand Chinese law and consider such knowledge helpful in widening their comprehension of China, and beneficial to their career choices.
We are therefore very happy to announce that Erasmus School of Law has attracted Mrs. Yuwen Li, BA in Chinese law (Peking University), PhD (Utrecht University), for setting up the Erasmus China Law Centre.
In the initial stage the Centre will mainly focus on strengthening China law research, and promoting legal cooperation with Chinese academic institutions. The Centre will recruit PhD candidates on Chinese law or China-related comparative law; cooperate with the Law School of Wuhan University and the China Law Society on projects relating to advancement of the rule of law building in China. The website will soon be online.
