Prof Dr. Frank Smeele (1966)
was appointed full-time professor in Commercial and Maritime Law in 2007. He studied law and liberal arts (European Studies) at the University of Amsterdam during which he went to study English Law at the University of Kent for a year. He graduated in both studies in 1991. He became a Ph.D. candidate at the Law School of Erasmus University at Rotterdam, where he obtained his Doctorate in law cum laude in 1998 on the thesis “Passieve legitimatie onder cognossement” (Identity of the Carrier under Bills of Lading).
In 1998, Frank Smeele became attorney-at-law with the Rotterdam bar and joined the leading Dutch transport and maritime law firm Van Traa Advocaten, where he made partner in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed part-time Professor in International Maritime Law at Erasmus School of Law.
