PhD at ESL

Besides professors, associate professors and assistant professors, Erasmus School of Law (ESL) is host to a group of (international) PhD candidates. Would you like to become part of our PhD community? Then please read the information below.

Important application information for PhD applicants

Who may apply:

  • Dutch and European/international students;
  • Chinese law students (mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). Candidates from partner universities of the Erasmus School of Law will be given preference, however, this should in no way hinder applicants from non-partner universities;
  • Lecturers, legal researchers, and legal practitioners who have obtained a university law degree and have practical experience.

Part-time PhD positions are open to those who would like to pursue PhD research while continuing their job either in China or in Europe.

Admission Criteria / Application

Master's Degree in Law

IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100

Potential candidates should send their curriculum vitae to Yuwen Li, along with a draft research proposal, a letter of recommendation, their reason for choosing the ECLC to carry out PhD study, and a statement  regarding their financial funding.

Research Topics

Research topics should suit to the scope of the research themes identified in the ECLC research focus ( 1 to 4).

Supervision

Supervision will be conducted jointly by Yuwen Li and professors from the Erasmus School of Law. Candidates will also benefit from the ECLC's network of distinguished China Law scholars.

Time path

Full-time PhD applicants are expected to complete their dissertation within four years. Part-time PhD students will have a flexible time path.
