Organisational aspects

Doctorate Committee
Each PhD candidate has a Doctorate Committee of his or her own. Each Doctorate Committee consists of at least three senior researchers (including at least two professors: one is the thesis supervisor, the other professor is not allowed to be an affiliated member of the supervisor’s research section), and the EGSL Director or the Dean of the PhD programme.

The main tasks of a Doctorate Committee are:

  • to take part in the application procedure regarding a specific applicant and the decision whether this applicant will be offered a place in the EGSL;
  • to follow the progress and accomplishments of a PhD candidate during his/her trajectory;
  • to decide at several moments in time whether the PhD candidate is allowed to continue his/her research.

Review Day
In June each year a Review Day will be held. On Review Day all PhD candidates can present their research to the senior staff members of ESL. For PhD candidates in the probationary year participation is obligatory.

Call for Ideas
Each year a Call for Ideas will be held. All PhD candidates will be invited to send in an idea for an activity (seminar, conference or another scientific event) to be organised by themselves and to be supported by EGSL. The best idea – selected by the board of EGSL - will be awarded a prize of 5.000 euros plus the managerial support of EGSL.
