Ph.D. Guide 2010

Introduction

Besides professors, associate professors and assistant professors the Erasmus School of Law (ESL) – the faculty of law of the Erasmus University Rotterdam – employs a large group of PhD candidates. The PhD Guide 2010 at hand provides an overview of the research activities of the pool from which the next generation of professors has to emerge. After a four-year period of solid research, the thesis is defended in public such that the research question, the answer to it and the arguments for this conclusion become available for the entire community. Until that final moment of defence, traditionally ended by ‘Hora est’, a PhD candidate flies below the radar.

By publication of this PhD Guide, we intend to make our colleagues at the ESL and scholars from outside our law school aware of the research topics of our PhD candidates. A group of 41 PhD candidates have contributed to this PhD Guide. They all prove that ESL is an inspiring place to conduct research. The individual contributions provide information about their research, their supervisors and furthermore provide their contact details. Besides the purpose to inform the reader, this guide could contribute to future collaboration in research. Given the wide range of research topics: criminal law, tax law, company law, public law, Dutch law, European Law, comparative law, Law and Economics, and  ven business economics, a wide audience is be appealed by the content of this guide. Even though the topics vary widely, the PhD candidates at ESL have one characteristic in common: their membership of the Association for PhD Candidates in law in Rotterdam Juridisch AIO vereniging Rotterdam, JAR). The mission statement of JAR is to gather PhD colleagues to exchange advices and experiences and – last but not least – to let them have an inspiring and pleasant time at ESL. A good atmosphere inspires people and helps them to advance their research. In order to realise this goal, JAR organises every last Friday of the month a drink (PhDrink). In addition to that, JAR arranges a dinner at the start of the year and in the summer: the Happy New JAR’s Dinner and the Midsummer Promovendiner. All PhD Candidates are very much welcome to participate in those events.

Furthermore JAR cooperates with the Erasmus PhD Association Rotterdam (EPAR) to initiate contacts between PhD candidates of the seven  aculties of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is our hope that this guide will serve as a source of inspiration for students in the final stage of their studies. The supply of new talent is necessary to maintain the quality of research in the future. We are deeply convinced that a career in academia may be a great alternative to a career in the private sector.
